Improvements

Anticipated improvements include combining several Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) strategies, along with improvements at the I-65 and Broadway interchanges. TSMO strategies maximize the safety and efficiency of existing systems.

TSMO Strategies

RAMP METERING controls the frequency of vehicles entering the roadway to match road capacity, leading to improved merging and reduced crash rates

VARIABLE SPEED LIMITS adjust based on real-time traffic roadway incidents, work zones and weather conditions, helping to reduce congestion.

DYNAMIC LANE CONTROL closes or opens lanes to provide advance warning of closures or incidents using signals above each lane.

DYNAMIC SHOULDER LANES offer additional capacity during peak congestion or in response to incidents.

EVENT MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES include incentivizing tow companies and increasing Hoosier Helper staff.

IMPROVED SIGNAGE AND QUEUE WARNINGS inform drivers of current conditions ahead.
